2050 Commission

The 2050 Commission, Western Australia's new productivity commission.

Today the Premier announced the creation of the 2050 Commission, Western Australia's new productivity commission.

The Commission will provide strategic advice to the WA Government on the productivity, growth and transformation of the Western Australian economy needed to meet the needs of the Western Australians in the lead-up to and, and beyond, 2050.

Its three core functions will be to:

  • provide Industry Development Action Plans (IDAPs), which will develop whole-of-government roadmaps to support delivery of the government's economic development priorities in specific industries;
  • conduct inquiries and research on matters referred to it by the Premier or Treasurer while also being able to propose topics for self-initiate inquiries to the Premier, for approval; and
  • continue to perform the Major Investment Project Assessment function currently delivered by Infrastructure WA, but with the threshold for assessment increasing from $100 million to $200 million, indexed to CPI so that it keeps up with market conditions.

The implications for all IWA's existing legislative functions and powers have not yet been determined and are anticipated to be clarified through internal government consultation during the drafting of legislation process.

Establishing the Commission represents a significant move toward enhancing our State's ability to plan economically for the future and positioning it as a global leader in investment attraction, industry facilitation and regulation.
